Dr. Valois earned his AS degree in Humanities & Social Sciences from SUNY Corning Community College, BS degree in Health Science from SUNY College at Brockport, MS in School Health and PhD in Community Health/Educational Psychology/Program Evaluation from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship, a U.S. Public Health Service Traineeship and the MPH degree in Health Behavior at the University of Alabama-Medical Center, School of Public Health in Birmingham. Dr. Valois also holds an adjunct appointment in Family & Preventive Medicine at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Valois has been funded for research by NIH, NIMH, CDC, HHS, the US DOE & DJJ, and by the Pew Charitable Trusts, Robert Wood Johnson and Rockefeller Foundations. He has been recognized for teaching excellence (University of Illinois, University of Texas & University of South Carolina), creative research, the use of media (TV & Radio) in health promotion and for distinguished professional service. Dr. Valois is a Fellow of the: American School Health Association, American Academy of Health Behavior, and American Association for Health Education. Recognition by the American School Health Association includes: the Dr. William A. Howe Award (ASHA’s highest recognition), the Research Scholar Award, a Distinguished Service Award, the Substance Abuse Prevention Award and a Presidential Citation (for service as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of School Health). Dr. Valois is also the 2002 American Association for Health Education (AAHE) Scholar (AAHE’s highest recognition).
Over a 38-year career, Dr. Valois has 223 total publications including books, monographs and book chapters with 175 of these publications as research scholarship articles in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals such as: the American Journal of Public Health; Journal of Orthopsychiatry; Health Psychology; Psychological Reports; Journal of Adolescent Health; Journal of School Health; Journal of Behavioral Medicine; American Journal of Preventive Medicine; Journal of Research on Adolescents; Personality & Individual Differences; Addictive Behaviors; Journal of Primary Prevention; and the Journal of Clinical & Child Psychology, among others. Success with external grant funding totaled 23.5 million. Dr. Valois has mentored/directed 17 Doctoral Dissertations, 11 Master’s Theses, and 9 Undergraduate Honors theses. These former students are currently employed at colleges, universities, CDC, NIH, HHS federal agencies and various state agencies and nonprofit community-based organizations.
Nationally, Dr. Valois has served as a consultant for the: National Institutes of Health and National Institute for Mental Health; US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention; US Department of Health & Human Services-National Registry of Evidence Based Programs & Practices and Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services; American Academy for Educational Development; and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, among others.
Internationally, Dr. Valois has served as a consultant for the: International School of Dusseldorf; Andean Rural Health Care (ARHC) and Foundation of Compassionate American Samaritans (FOCAS) in Calebasse, Haiti; the Hong Kong Institute of Education; Taiwan National Institute of Health; Chinese University of Hong Kong; Research Grants Council of Hong Kong; Taiwan National Health Promotion Bureau and Fu-Jen Catholic University in Hong Kong, and Agency for Health Quality & Assessment, Catalonia, Barcelona Spain.
Dr. Valois is currently the Associate Editor-in-Chief for the American Journal of Health Education.
