Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

Noise is a global environmental and public health issue. It affects not only humans but also other animals and insects, such as acoustic ecology, social ecology, etc. On our planet, sound environment is a dimension of planetary health. Our understanding of the acoustic environment is not only perceived noise, but also pleasurable soundscape. The World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce citizens' exposure to community noise in urban and suburban areas. To manage and control noise, Europe released the European Noise Directive in June 2002. And China released the Law on the Prevention and Control of Noise Pollution in March 1997 and revised in June 2022, to optimize acoustic functional zones in built environment. On the other hand, noise is destroying regional sound, and we should conserve them in relatively tranquil area. After decades, we hopefully experience regional sounds that have always existed in our city, which is an aspiration in the future. Then, research on tranquil area has received much attention. This inspired us to edit a collection to answer ‘How to make earth tranquil again?’ .

Thus, we propose this Special Issue “Tranquil Area Observations: Towards Natural and Social Sustainability”. We welcome submissions of original research articles, reports or technical notes, reviews, and mini-reviews covering, topics including but not limited to the following:

-Experience of multi-sensory interaction

-Natural sound and human health

-Environmental behavior and cognitive disposition

-Social sensing in built environment

-Soundscape with cultural and regional significance

-Planning, design and management of tranquil area

-Innovative application of Internet of Things and multi-source data
