Special Issue Information

As research on English for academic purposes (EAP) has rapidly developed over the past thirty years, one of its core features has been placing great emphasis on academic writing. It goes without saying that a great proportion of what students are expected to do and achieve in academic settings to gain and demonstrate their knowledge is centered on writing. Therefore, one’s ability in academic writing is widely regarded as an integral part of disciplinary learning and academic achievement. Academic writing is defined as writing, that involves the expression of ideas as a response to another group or person, expected to be thoughtfully elaborated, well connected, reasonably sequenced, sufficiently supported, and correctly reasoned.
Academic writing includes writing research articles, student dissertations, grant proposals, argumentative essays, technical reports, conference abstracts, and lab reports. Each type of academic writing, as a distinct genre, has specific linguistic features, organizational structure, and purpose, investigated in genre analysis. Lexical bundles, phrase frames, grammatical complexity, cohesion, negation, and highlighting strategies are among the linguistic variables widely researched in this area, mostly with a corpus-based approach. On the other hand, rhetorical structure, move analysis, and argument structure are among the salient organization-related issues researched in academic writing scholarship.
The present special issue on academic writing deals with the wide range of approaches and variables explored in this domain.
